Darker Wood Options for Custom Tables, Desks & Countertops

Designing and ordering your own piece of custom furniture starts with selecting the ideal wood slab for your tabletop. At Chagrin Valley, you choose from hundreds of wood slabs that we carry in our warehouse. These woods are ideal for epoxy resin and wood dining tables, conference tables, coffee tables, or desks. Ohio is blessed with rich and diverse forests that grow a wide variety of hardwood and softwood species. When starting your design, think how the epoxy color plays with the wood color and grain patterns. Do you want high contrast, a match, or something in between? Let’s start with a look at some of the darker woods that make ideal awesome epoxy resin river tables and desks:

Walnut: Rich, dark brown hardwood. Ideal for epoxy resin furniture. Strong with a variety of grain colors. Lighter shades of brown available.

Cherry: Hardwood. Rich reddish color and smooth grain. Popular with customers who order epoxy resin tables.

Lighter Wood Options for Custom Tables, Desks & Countertops

Oak: Attractive, open grain. White oak – greyish-brown shade. Red oak – same with reddish tinge. Dense, heavy, durable, stain and scratch-resistant.

Elm: Tough, durable wood. Reddish brown to light tan. Off-white sapwood. Dramatic grain.

Hickory: Hard and heavy hardwood. Combination of light and dark colors. Rustic look. Light to medium brown color with a reddish hue. Yellowish brown sapwood. Rustic look.

Beech: Elegant yet dated appearance. Easy hardwood to work with for our woodworkers.

Maple: Light-brown to reddish color. Durable, dense, moisture-resistant qualities. Good for heavy use. Swirling grain patterns.

Ash: Grayish light brown to reddish color. Strong – excellent for heavy use (i.e. restaurants). Straight grain.

Live Edge Wood Slabs for Custom Tables, Desks & Countertops

Most of the custom furniture that Chagrin Valley designs and builds make use of the live edge, or natural edge, of the wood slab. Live edge slabs preserve the outside of the original harvested tree to show the outer edges of the visible tree trunk. Chagrin Valley’s furniture designers and artisans enhance and showcase the beauty of the rustic natural edges of wood slabs through our planing and staining techniques. The live edges of the slab can either make up the outside edges of a table or desk, or the live edge slab can be cut down the middle, flipped so that the live edges face each other, and then the space between the live edges is filled with epoxy to make a beautiful river table. Our biomorphic furniture uses numerous highly distressed pieces of live edge slabs placed in a puzzle pattern throughout the table and the spaces between the live edge slabs are filled with epoxy resin for both beauty and as a strong bond to hold the slabs together.

Biomorphic Highly Distressed Wood Slabs for Custom Tables, Desks & Countertops

Biomorphic Epoxy Resin and Wood Furnishings use the natural forms of the wood, its distressed features, and colored epoxy to create stunning statement pieces for any room in the home. Biomorphism is a furniture design movement in which a piece’s form echoes the forms and patterns found in nature. As for Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture’s biomorphic epoxy and wood furniture, the form actually IS nature. The shapes and forms and natural imperfections in the wood are kept intact and inform the look of the finished table or desk. Also called organic, natural shape, natural form, or just natural furniture, biomorphic tables and desks have become a popular offering at Chagrin Valley. The naturally distressed slab or slabs retain their original state, warts and all. This includes gouges, cracks, discolorations, insect trails, bird peckings, rot, knots, burls, and so forth. In nature, these are caused by forces of nature such as lightning strikes, high winds, ice and snow, insect infestation, fungi, and birds. CVCF saw the beauty in these naturally distressed slabs and started using them in our live edge epoxy tables. “Essentially, biomorphic furniture brings nature indoors,” says CVCF designer Sky Ironhorse, a Cleveland Institute of Art graduate in Industrial Design.
